Rooftop railings

Creda is one of the very few manufacturers in Italy building every rooftop railing, accessories included, entirely to measure rather than picking from a fixed range. A non-standard fixing detail, such as an odd parapet thickness, a curved roof edge or a mixed metal-and-membrane surface, goes through the in-house technical office as a drawing before it goes into production.

Founded in 2019 and now a team of 19 people, Creda keeps design, aluminium extrusion and assembly-manual creation under one roof. 

Technical requirements a rooftop railing must meet

A rooftop railing is a structural safety barrier, so its design has to satisfy both a height requirement and a resistance requirement, on top of holding up to weather:

• Height - Creda's standard rooftop railing height is 1100 mm from the walking surface, adjustable on request for specific site or regulatory needs.
• Structural resistance - the rail and its fixings must withstand a distributed load along the top rail plus a localised impact, such as an operator leaning or an accidental knock, without deflecting beyond the limits the applicable standard sets.
• Corrosion resistance - extruded aluminium uprights and AISI stainless steel brackets are chosen specifically for constant exposure to rain, UV and, on industrial roofs, corrosive atmospheres.
• Roof-safe fixing - brackets and loads have to match what the roof structure, parapet or sheeting can actually bear, which is why Creda calculates fixings case by case rather than applying a single standard bracket to every roof.

In Italy, permanent guardrails and edge protection on buildings and industrial roofs sit under D.Lgs 81/2008 for the general duty to protect workers from fall risk, with structural requirements for the supporting elements set out in NTC 2018 (DM 17/01/2018). Fixed access equipment for machinery and plant is covered by the European standard EN ISO 14122-3. Where a rooftop railing is temporary or removable rather than permanently fixed, EN 13374 is the European reference standard for temporary edge protection systems, which classifies performance according to roof pitch. Fixed and temporary rooftop railings: which one fits your roof

• Fixed (permanent) rooftop railings - Bolted directly to a parapet, veletta or metal roof sheeting, the PRP-050, PRP-070, PRP-090 (and their 20° inclined variants) and PRP-110-LAM configurations are the right choice when a roof is accessed regularly for maintenance, HVAC servicing or inspection and a permanent, structural barrier is justified.
• Freestanding and removable rooftop railings - The PRP-110-AUTO and PRP-110-20-AUTO use a ballasted base and don't penetrate the roof, which keeps the membrane and its waterproofing warranty intact. That makes them the usual choice on flat, membrane or green roofs. The PRP-110-RIB folds down and can be removed without tools, suited to roofs accessed only occasionally, such as during seasonal maintenance or a specific project.

Both families come from the same modular system, so a facility with mixed roof conditions (a solid parapet on one side, a bare membrane edge on the other) doesn't need two different suppliers.

Which roofs need a rooftop railing

• Flat and membrane roofs with unprotected edges, where maintenance staff, HVAC technicians or solar installers need regular access.
• Roofs with a parapet wall, where a rail can be fixed on top, on the outer face or on the inner face depending on the wall's thickness and height.
• Metal sheet roofs, common on industrial and logistics buildings, where fixings have to match the sheeting profile rather than a solid slab.
• Pitched or inclined roof edges, where an angled configuration keeps the rail vertical relative to the walking surface rather than the roof plane.
• Rooftop plant rooms and technical areas such as chillers, AHUs, solar arrays and antennas, where routine service visits create a recurring fall risk around equipment platforms.
